ABSTRACT
To describe the etiology of infantile onset epilepsies and to determine the underlying central nervous disease in symptomatic cases. Patients and Methods: Etiologic factors were investigated in 174 patients with epilepsy, whose seizures appeared between one month and two years of age. Etiologic groups and clinical features were compared. Results: The mean age of onset was 7.7±6.3 months. Etiologies were symptomatic, cryptogenic, and idiopathic in 55.2%, 22.4%, and 21.8% of patients, respectively. Pre- and perinatal factors (35.4%) developmental cerebral anomalies (22.9%), and neurodegenerative diseases (12.5%) were the leading etiologic factors in the symptomatic group. A diagnosis of West syndrome was made in 24%. Conclusion: In infantile onset epilepsies, symptomatic cases account for a major group, of which diseases causing diffuse cerebral damage are the most common.
