ABSTRACT
In .order to investigate the possible relationship between epilepsy and humoral and cellular immunity, this study was carried out on patients with generalized and partial epilepsies, and patients with febrile convulsions. Patients using antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) were also evaluated with respect to drug effects on the immune system. A total of 36 patients (14 girls, 22 boys; age range 1-13 years) were included in the study. Of these, 18 patients were on antiepileptic drugs. The results obtained were compared with those of 17 and 60 healthy control children who underwent cellular and humoral immune system examination, respectively. T3, T4 and T8 cells, B lymphocytes, immunoglobulins and IgG subclasses were determined in the study patients and controls. Results revealed high blood levels of IgM and lgG2 in patients receiving AEDs. T4 lymphocyte levels and T4/T8 ratio were significantly low in patients without treatment. Although B lymphocyte levels were higher in patients than those of controls, the difference did not reach statistical significance. Findings supported a possible relationship between the immune system and epilepsy and provided challenge for further studies.
Bu çalışmada, epilepsi ve İmmünite arasındaki olası ilişkiyi araştırmak amacıyla, jeneralize ve parsiyel epilepsi ile febril konvulsiyonlu hastalarda humoral ve hücresel immün sistem açısından inceleme yapılmıştır. Ayrıca, antiepileptik ilaç kullanmakta olan hastalar, ilaçların immün sistem üzerine etkileri yönünden değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmaya, 14'ü kız, 22'si erkek toplam 36 hasta (yaş dağılımı 1-13) alınmıştır. Bu hastaların 18'i antiepileptik ilaç kullanmaktadır. Ayrıca, hücresel immün sistem yönünden incelenen sağlam 17 çocuktan ve humoral immün sistem yönünden incelenen sağlam 60 çocuktan kontrol grubu oluşturulmuştur. Hasta ve kontrollerde T3 T4, T8 hücreleri, B lenfositler, immünglobulin ve IgG subgrup düzeyleri belirlenmiştir, ilaç almakta olan hasta grubunda IgM ve IgG2 değerleri yüksek bulunmuştur. T4 lenfosit sayıları ve T4/T8 oranı, ilaç kullanmayan hasta grubunda anlamlı azalma göstermiştir. B lenfosit sayıları epileptik hasta grubunda, kontrol grubuna göre yüksek bulunmakla beraber, bu artış anlamlı bulunmamıştır. Epilepsi, birçok etmenle ilişkilidir. Büyük bir olasılıkla, immün sistem de bu etmenlerden biridir.
